Russian millionaire could have been poisoned, a coroner suggested on Wednesday, but police blunders meant he was unable to say for sure.
Attempts to establish the truth about the death of Alexander Perepilichnyy, who had been blowing the whistle on alleged organised crime in Russia, were hampered by serious errors in the original police investigation.
An inquest heard crucial evidence had been lost or disregarded, including the contents of the dead man’s stomach.
On the day of his death, Mr Perepilichnyy ate a bowl of soup cooked by his wife that was thought may have contained poison. However, the coroner noted that Tatiana Perepilichnyy had not suffered any ill effects, despite eating some soup, nor had a passer-by who came into contact with Mr Perepilichnyy’s vomit when trying to resuscitate him.
