A Manor with Hidden Secrets

This house near Tunbridge Wells in Kent has five bedrooms and is on sale for £8 million through Savills

Seventeen years ago, while renovating their home in Kent, the owners of Twyssenden Manor peeled back some uninspiring paneling to reveal a medieval mural in the master bedroom. Across the hall they knocked through wall plaster to reveal a door into a private chapel.

The main five-bedroom house, which dates from 1480, was the seat of the Twysden family. It later fell into the hands of the Fowle family, which explains why it is their coat of arms on the keystone over the main entrance and above the fireplaces.

In the middle of the house is a late 16th-century sandstone tower with a timber cupola and viewing platform, from which you can survey the estate’s 260 acres.
