Billionaire gives $189 million to study the use of artificial intelligence for good rather than for evil

Calling ethics and AI “one of the major issues of our age,” billionaire Stephen Schwarzman has given $189 million for study of the moral implications of artificial intelligence.

The 150-million-pound grant to Oxford University in England was the largest the institution had received since the Renaissance, the school said in a statement.

“The reason do it is to protect society,” Schwarzman, CEO of the private equity firm Blackstone, told the Associated Press. “AI can be an enormous force for good. But on the downside it can lead to high unemployment. It could destabilize society if it happens too fast.”
